Size of file in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB).
Home page
The root or top-level page of any website.
Official
Constructed using University resources and conducting University business.
Plugin
Helper programs that allow web browsers to view non-HTML files, for example: PDF, Flash, Java, MS Word or multimedia files.
Publicly available
Available via the World Wide Web without access restriction.
Site owner
Position or person with executive responsibility for a website.
Web applications
Websites or web pages primarily providing interactive, dynamic content services.
Web browser
Computer program used to access resources and services available via the World Wide Web.
Web pages
XML, XHMTL or HTML content available via the World Wide Web.
Website
Logical or other groupings of web pages and related information, resources and services under the control of content custodian.
This policy governs the development and maintenance of all information, resources and services on the University network that are accessed with a web browser.

1. Applicability
- Sections of the Web Policy apply differently to official and non-official websites and to publicly-available websites and sites to which access is restricted.
- Unless otherwise noted, the following requirements apply to all information, resources and services on the University network that are accessed with a web browser.
- All websites are expected to comply with the relevant requirements in this Web Policy from 1 January 2012.

2. Legal requirements
- All websites must comply with the UWA ESOS Act 2002 Compliance Guidelines.
- All web pages must comply with the requirements of the Copyright Act and the "Digital Agenda" amendments to the Copyright Act.

3. Design
- Use of the University visual identity must comply with the Brand and Visual Identity Policy.
- All publicly-available, official web pages must use the templated visual identity elements as supplied by the University Website Office.
- All publicly-available, official web pages must establish a visual style within the University visual identity and maintain it consistently throughout the website.
- All official home pages must provide a coherent and consistent image of the position of the website within the University and reflect important and relevant relationships to other sections of the University.

4. Navigation
- All web pages in a website must provide navigational links that appear and behave in a consistent fashion.
- All publicly-available, official web pages, except web applications, must incorporate the templated search tool as supplied by the University Website Office.
- All publicly-available, official web pages, except web applications, must include the following information when linking to information, resources or services that will require a plugin or separate application:

- file size
- All business units must ensure that their official website is listed in the University's Contact Directory.

5. Structure
- All publicly-available, official websites, except web applications, must structure their websites in accordance with the directions in the Structure and Navigation section of this website.

6. Accessibility
- All official web pages must meet accepted world class standards as detailed in Priorities One and Two of the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 2.0.
- All official web pages must include in the page footer a link labeled Accessibility pointing to a statement: “All official web pages at The University of Western Australia must meet world class accessibility standards. If you are experiencing difficulty accessing information, resources or services on this webpage or pages on other UWA websites, please contact [link to contact mechanism]”
- Site owners are responsible for ensuring that requests for assistance via the “link to contact mechanism” in the Accessibility statement are expedited where appropriate.

7. Archiving
- Site owners are responsible for ensuring that all official web pages are appraised according to criteria in the University Policy on Record Management and that records of all published modifications to web pages meeting the criteria and required metadata are captured in a record management system.

8. Registration of web servers
- All publicly-available web servers must be registered in the subnet administration database.

9. Workflow / information management
- All publicly-available, official web pages, except web applications, must incorporate page footer elements as described below:

- incorporate a link to the contact details of the position, person or people responsible for last modifying and/or authorising modification of the webpage
- incorporate the date and time that the webpage was last modified.
- All publicly available, official web pages must be reviewed at least every two years unless classified by the relevant content custodian as a publicly available archive.
- All official web pages must incorporate metadata in accordance with the University's Metadata Standard.

10. Compliance
- It is the responsibility of content custodians to ensure full compliance of all websites with this policy.
- Access to websites that fail to comply with policy requirements may be restricted.
